The Neighborhood
The house is located in East Oakland in an area that is somewhere between an upper working-class and lower middle-class African American neighborhood. There are pockets of Latinos on our street, and predominantly Latino neighborhoods within a short distance. Three blocks away there is a regentrified street (Havenscourt) that has families with more money and more racial diversity who are fixing up their houses. The neighborhood watch leader lives directly across the street from us and keeps tabs on the comings and goings of our street. According to her, there haven’t been any (non-domestic) violent crimes in our neighborhood, but there have been property crimes (stereos getting stolen out of cars, house burglary, etc.). There is an apartment building next door, but there hasn’t been a problem with parties, loud music, or domestic violence. However, the sound of children playing can be heard whenever it isn’t raining.

The house is exactly one mile from the Coliseum BART, one block from a major bus line, and short walking distance to the Eastmont Mall, fast food, library, and a grocery store. We are equidistant between the 580 freeway and the 880 freeway.
